Many people seem to the think Dew-Code.com is run by a group of people, or some big corporation. Well, it's flattering if you have that impression, but the truth is, its just one person. While I'd love nothing more than to continue giving away my scripts, my time and experience, I do have the same needs as everyone else. If you've found Dew-Code.com , or any of the scripts found there to be helpful, please consider making a contribution.

For the year 2009, as of 12/16/09, A total of $50 USD has been contributed, or roughly $4.17 per month, for the year. While that is of course appreciated, unless more contributions are received, I will have no choice but to make future scripts available for purchase only.

First I should point out who this article is for. If you just want to throw together some HTML with tons of ads in it and forget about it, this article is NOT for you. If you plan to maintain a website with useful and meaningful content then read on.

First a foundation to build on.

What is your website about? It should be something that you are interested in. You don't have to be an expert on the topic, but it should be something you've been interested in for some time and not just a passing phase. Determine the keywords that best reflect what your site is about. To do that, think of what you might type into Google to find your site. Grab a notepad and jot down the different terms you think of. Use these terms to come up with a unique and pronounceable (memorable) domain name and own it through cheap domain regisitration.

You can also refer to the keyword list when it's time to start doing search engine optimization (SEO). If you haven't already, register a domain and host it on a Linux web server with PHP and MySQL support. The amount of free quality software for the LAMP platform is staggering, making creating and maintaining a quality web site trivial and even fun.

So you have a catchy domain name, and a reliable web hosting. A reliable webhost will be worth the extra dollar or two a month, so shop a bit. Don't go with the cheapest you can find.
