More Dew-Code Stuff

Many people seem to the think Dew-Code.com is run by a group of people, or some big corporation. Well, it's flattering if you have that impression, but the truth is, its just one person. While I'd love nothing more than to continue giving away my scripts, my time and experience, I do have the same needs as everyone else. If you've found Dew-Code.com , or any of the scripts found there to be helpful, please consider making a contribution.

For the year 2009, as of 12/16/09, A total of $50 USD has been contributed, or roughly $4.17 per month, for the year. While that is of course appreciated, unless more contributions are received, I will have no choice but to make future scripts available for purchase only.

Regards,

Linux comes in many different flavors
Choosing an open source operating system can be a daunting task if you are unfamiliar with the numerous options you'll be faced with. Here we'll try to make the plunge into open source a bit easier for you.

First things first.

Sure you can use open source software on your comercial operating system, such as Windows, and of course the latest Macintosh OS is based on a distribution of Linux, so many software packages will work fine with it. However, the main concept behind open source is the free exchange of ideas. Free of restrictions, free of limitations and almost always free of charge.

With that in mind, you may want to dust off that outdated computer you retired last year and put a new free operating system on it, or you could dual boot your current system, but that lacks the client server relationship I've come to love.

.Even a lowly 486 w/64MB RAM will make an adequate Linux server for your home. If you'll want to use the open source equivlent of Windows, called XWindows, you'll want a 500mhz or faster CPU. Of course these days, it's actually pretty hard to find something that slow.

According to Linux.org there are over 200 varieties of Linux to choose from. Some designed to run from 1 or 2 floppy disks, others run directly from a CD. If this will be your first exposure to Linux, you'll likely have a better experience by choosing a widely used "mainstream" distribution. A big advantage is if you ever need help, you'll find many experienced users who are able to assist you.

When you narrow your choices down to the following criteria...

  • Enlish Language
  • Intel CPU Compatable
  • Mainstream/General Public
you'll get a more managle 46 choices. Several of wich are geared towards the first time Linux user.

So lets pick a Linux distribution that is right for you shall we?
