Having been involved in on site search engine optimization for almost a decade now, I must admit it's been interesting. Some things I expected to happen in the ever mutating organism that is SEO, didn't. In fact, 5-6 years ago, I actually thought that a lot of those other search engines would not be around today, and Google would have the English speaking countries at least, pretty much to themselves. I guess partially I was right because there has been quite a few changes. Some of those other "search engines" have evolved away from being a "search engine" or have been gobbled up by other organisms in their quest for superiority. Isn't biology fun! So, to the question. Is Google the only search engine that matters? For native English speaking countries, my answer is, as it was 10 years ago, "yes pretty much". Over the past 10 years Google has had a big majority in the market share of search engine traffic, ranging from 75% to 90%. Today it's at about 80%. That is to say, that 4 out of 5 of your potential customers will use Google to find the product or service you offer. That isn't to say other search engines are not worth paying attention to, but if your site ranks well in Google for your targeted keywords, in all likelihood the majority of those other search engines will rank your site similarly. So instead I suggest focusing on content of course, and organic back links. Or, just focus on content and use a reputable Local SEO Company to help you with back links. That will help to improve your position, and the number of keywords you rank well regardless of which search engine is used. |
