Well actually quite a lot of scripts these days use .htaccess, unfortunately there are a lot of greedy reseller hosts who know nothing about the underlying technology they profit from. DewNewPHPLinks is bundled with Fantastico, an albeit small selling point for them, yet they don't take a minute to set the default value in the .htacess to what their server likes, although I doubt they would even know how.
True most scripts that use .htacess don't set a directive like this one does, most use mod-rewrite syntax.. but still, a lot of scripts do use .htaccess . I apologize for your frustration and apparent inability to get something for nothing, but I simply can not predict what environment you might install the script on. Of course I can be hired to fix it for you, but then that wouldn't be something for nothing

I have no qualms with the .htaccess setup. After a few days of working on this in my spare time, I've got it up and running on my Hostgator account.
I've also almost got it figured out on how to run locally on my Mac for testing purposes -- it's more a MySQL and PHP setup issue than a .htaccess issue. Setting up the .htaccess configuration just one of the steps I've had to work through on both the remote and the local installs, but I've figured them both out with some googling and the help of the forum here.
Don't beat the guy down for his programming method. It's a good app that I'm very glad was included in my Fantastico package. I agree with him on this one -- from most of my experiences, all of these server installs require some kind of messing around under the hood, and this one is no different. I appreciate the hard work to program the application and support it in this fashion.

No, I'm not religious just tired of hoping that the human race will evolve into a species with a little more patience, perciverence and appreciate someone else's time when they are trying to help them for nothing in return.
Today, people want everything right and they want everything now, right now costs money.
Some things simply cannot not be dealt with by the push a button.
Regardless, obviously this script is not for you. I wish you luck in finding something comparable that suits your needs.

Hi Guys,
First time here and reading all about .htaccess.
I too have problems with the 404 error. Tried all the suggestions regarding editing the .htaccess.
No joy, but I did notice you keep mentioning apache.....
What do I do if my host is running IIS ?
Suggestions please.
Regards,
Paul.
